THE MOUNTAIN MUSE

This old man of the East Tennesee mountains has reluctantly agreed to come forth and be a consultant on things philosophical. He is a seeker of knowledge as well. After having been close to his Creator all these years, he is still desirous of knowing more about himself, others, and the physical world about us. He is sometimes a dreamer. Dreamers have reputations, sometimes good, sometimes so-so, and sometimes bad. Only you can judge.

Story Synopses

As you scroll down, The Mountain Muse will offer a synopsis of several stories which may be of interest to you, the casual reader.

These pages are currently under construction and will be amended from time to time. Any suggestions are always welcome.

I am currently in the process of writing a fantasy historical novel about the Maya Indians of Mesoamerica. It's scope is very wide, incorporating the Maya version of creation, based on an ancient manuscript, heretofore unknown.

The story is told by a fictional character whose dreams bear him from the present to the hoary past, and back again. His adventures along the way make up the bulk of the story, while my theories of how and where civilization evolved tend to creep into the fabric of the presentation.

The working title of this effort is "When Time Was Young". Proposed completion date: December, 2003.

Another project I am excited about is a story of the colonization of Georgia by James Oglethorpe.

This story is told through the eyes of a bright young man who, by hook or crook, becomes part of the crew of the first ship of colonists Oglethorpe enlists to create the colony of Gerogia in the New World. The interacions of this young man with the colonists, especially a young lady fresh out of debtor's prison, and with the Creek Indians help to start this account.

The action involves skirmishes with the Spanish from Florida, the establishment of forts on the so-called "Golden Isles" off the coast of Georgia, and the dealings with John and Charles Wesley, the founders of Methodism. As the story progresses, the reader will detect my admiration for the Indians of the area and their proud heritage.

Having visited and worked, (with Southern Railway), in these same areas gives me a unique way of approaching the subject.

The working title of the work is: "Reluctant Empire". This novel was completed in November, 2001. Feelers to publishers and agents have been sent out. Awaiting positive responses.

I have completed a book about the early life of Jesus Christ, detailing my impressions of how He must have been brought up. Since so little is told of this phase of His life upon this earth, I have had to rely on close and intense research of life in Judea and Galilee. There is the matter of His brothers and sisters, Mary's constant concern for Him, Joseph's death and burial, and any number of incidents in His life which might have made Him more fully realize, from His human standpoint, just what His mission was.

This has been a labor of love and has been very gratifying and humbling. I had doubts about writing on this particular subject, afraid it might be somewhat sacreligious. I did pray about it and was led to read John 21:25.

The title of this work is: "The Fullness Of Time". Have received two rejections thus far. I am subscribing to ECPA, "Evangelical Christian Publishers Association", an organization which has as its members the leading Christian and Religious publishers in the US. They will showcase an author's work for 6 months for all their members to review. I hope to get some responses soon.

I have been engaged for some time now in writing a historical novel about the fight for the indepedence of Scotland during the period 1290-1330.

The story centers around the historical personage of Robert the Bruce, King Robert I, of Scotland, his defeats, victories, and the innovations he employed against the kings of England, King Edward I and Edward II. The crowning of Robert, the court intrigue, the setbacks, the triumphs, all are told through the eyes of ficticious William Stirling, whose romantic interests begin with Calura, a maid of the village of Scone. Of course, Will's horizons are broadened when he becomes one of Robert's inner circle.

The story attempts to interweave Will's sense of morality into the temptations which beset him in the wild Scottish countryside and on into the courts of the kings of England and France. He is forced to face the taking of another's life, plus reacting to the charms of countless maidens of Scottish, Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and French descent.

It is also the author's intention of setting straight certain facts which were thrown to the wind in the recent movie, "Braveheart", starring Mel Gibson. My story begins where "Braveheart" leaves off, with the execution of Scottish hero, William Wallace, and was started long before the movie was contemplated.

William Stirling is from the small village of Luss, situated on the shores of Loch Lomond, which, strangely enough, is the ancestral home of the author's family, Colquhoun.

The working title of this work is "The Lion of Luss", with the proposed completion date scheduled for December, 2001.

I am currently writing an article, (free gratis), each week in "The Post", a local weekly newspaper. I plan to collect these articles about my personal exploits into a book which I will probably call "The Unvarnished Truth". All the stories are true and are about a simpler time which some call "the good ol' days".

More to come on the next update.
